Taraz, in the south holds the record for the number of name changes over the years, but Astana is up to six now I think. Many cities have and use both Kazakh and Russian names happily.
Now, back to those pesky pens!
Before we get back to the pens, one more name-related anecdote: the leadership a few years ago (I think it was President Nazarbayev) wanted to change the name of the country to "Kazakh Yeli" or something. His logic was that the world thoughtlessly lumped his hapless country in with "the 'Stans" and thus it suffered an identity crisis.
I think he had a point.
