The gate check is not my issue. the issue is forcing it pre security at YYZ. If it is a question of cabin space they should bring back the sky check. Most people I have seen voluntarily do it at the gate. They can pick it up at the gate on arrival. I see no problems with that.
But it is not due to cabin space otherwise they would not be doing it the way they are doing it now.
Just to clarify, if it’s gate checked you pick it up at the destination, not at the arrival gate on the dash 8. The only skycheck route for the dash 8 is YTZ-YUL. I believe the CR2 has skycheck too but there are fewer and fewer of those these days.
Like I said a few posts earlier getting people to check bags is partially to speed up the boarding process.
