Most of the time, I am coming off an International fight and doing a layover and then taking a morning flight. There is lot of stuff one would need on a 14 hour flight. I have had my stuff stolen in such an incident from my hand luggage as there is no lock on it. Plus I have fragile electronic items in it too.
If you get forced to gate check, then you take out of your carry on what you need onboard. I carry a folding grocery bag, just in case. I do not risk them losing my carry on, or my essential for the flight/first day. By the time i have removed all my electronics, meds, toiletries and a few other things, I basically have my whole carry on in a tote bag. Haha. They obviously do not want lithium batteries in the hold.
