The best way to redeem AS miles west coast to Tokyo is to check the AS website obsessively for available award seats and book online when you find something.

As already noted, the best odds are JL within about two weeks of departure. Right now, SFO-TYO is pretty easy, but the return is extremely difficult. If SQ ever releases seats to AS again (literally nothing right now), their flight LAX-NRT would also be a great option.
