This was on a Dash 8, so, 100% economy. (50 minute flight, whatever) The bins were almost comically empty. And then someone almost took my bag at the end because they have the same one as me, I had to stop them and tell them to look at the bag tag.

There are 5 Dash 8's with smaller bins (FINs 494-498) that GA are told to tag as many bags as possible so that could be what happened here. The main reason is to try to expedite boarding process. Having said that, I wouldn't be happy being forced to gate check my bag as someone in Zone 1/2.
