Sure, and I was going to do the same, but the flight director made someone in front of me deplane and put his reasonably-sized carry-on on the loading shelf. I know these Dash 8's well enough to know it would've fit in the overhead... didn't seem to matter.

As for my bag, I briefly considered flashing my Aeroplan bag tag and saying "I know my bag will fit" but good rarely comes from arguing with flight crew.

(And for what it's worth, the FD and the other FA were already standing out in font of Billy Bishop smoking cigarettes by the time I retrieved my bag and left the terminal. So I think they just wanted to get everyone off the plane as soon as possible so they could GTFO.)
