Interesting. I had assumed that booking the flight and paying for the fees with the Alaska card would qualify him for the free checked bag. I decided to consult so-called "artificial intelligence" and here's the answer Microsoft's "Bing" AI coughed up (my bolding):

According to the FAQ page of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, eligible Alaska Airlines VisaŽ primary consumer credit cardholders who have an open account at the time of travel and up to 6 guests traveling on the same reservation may check 1 bag free of charge on qualifying reservations. Airfare must be purchased with your card to qualify for this benefit. Therefore, if you close your Alaska Airlines credit card before you fly, you will not get the free checked bag benefit. You must have an open account at the time of travel to receive the benefit. I hope this helps. 😊
