Simply attempting to open the auto-held reservation will display a "your trip has been canceled" message and then the hold is removed and you can proceed to book your "duplicate" trip as usual.
I've had it both ways, I've been able to go back and purchase an auto-held reservation when it didn't let me pay the first time, and I've also seen the above message as well.
