I think I bought miles once to get enough in my account for a particular trip.

I agree, though- they're creating so many points they may as well be pesos or piastres. I remember the Good Old Days- my husband's account had 100,000 miles near expiration, I bought a $15 iTunes card through the shopping portal and later used those miles for 2 RT Business Class trips to Madrid. That's never gonna happen again. (He died in 2016 so that was quite awhile ago.)

Thanks to the OP for the heads-up on the Stand Up to Cancer promo- I have a shiny new AA MasterCard (got it just before the annual fee increase) and just donated $500. That plus the sign-on bonus for the card added 85,000 pesos (I mean Loyalty Points) to my account. Hey, I bet I could get from MCI to ORD on that!
