If it were me, I'd make an adventure of it.
Find luggage storage in terminal 8, drop bags there and then go to the city.
Or eat a meal in Jackson Heights, or Flushing or Astoria or go to PS1 or the museum of the moving image, or catch a game at Shea or something.
There's a thread somewhere on the NYC board about what to do on long layovers.
