you can apply for compensation regardless of what you end up doing. that is a separate thing.

you can book on easyjet and claim the cost back from BA. if you do that, do not cancel & refund your flights. you can cancel and get a refund (if that would be more than the cost of your easyjet flight maybe that would be better), but if you cancel then BA has no further responsibility - so you couldn't claim back the cost of the new booking.
