SDC is for UA operated flights. Whether you can SDC off a partner operated flight is hit or miss.

This should have been done in advance, by phone. And given that UA wouldn't allow SDC, would only have been possible without added fare if new route met conditions of your fare rules. Leaving to in person check-in was not a good plan.
