Apparently LH are not alone, and the US market is going the same way. In a recent YouTube video reviewing Singapore Airlines, Insider Business's journalist says at about 25:30,
"More and more US-Based carriers like American Airlines are pulling first-class cabins in favor of investing in more luxurious business classes."
As with most business decisions, revenue is driving these changes. The airlines want to sell full fares on premium seats, however that works out.
