The swap is for the winter schedules.

Pure speculation, but I’d guess:
  • A380 on-time dispatch reliability from LHR has been poor. The early BA285/284 rotation has more inbound aircraft options and longer turns to resolve problems.
  • Slightly more connecting options particularly to India. BA285 can be fed from the overnight BOM/DEL and BA284 can feed the lunchtime departures to India.
  • Fares are higher on the earlier BA284. That may have something to do with being a smaller aircraft, Club Suites, or preferred by London based travellers?

As a BA287/286 regular (better for working schedule and jet lag adjustment), I’ll miss the upper deck side-bins but the 777 has newer suites, boarding front the lounge (A380 boarding in SFO has always been quite hectic), and perhaps more upgrade availability with a big CWS cabin.
