Why?
It‘s not that they force you onto those planes. It‘s an LH Group alternative to the LCCs mentioned by oliver2002.
There apparently is a market and they try to get their share of it, From a German perspective rather EW should do these flights than their foreign competitors.
If you’re not their target group: fine. You can still fly mainline LH, LX or OS with (in case of LH arguably 😉
proper J class. The flying masses may be happy to have another cheap(er) option.
