Wonderful that happened but I wouldn't be switching based on this. I got two upgrades to CW when Blue (basic level) and these were clearly due to overselling of the lower cabins. Since then Ive been silver for a year and gold for 4, I've only had the odd upgrade on short haul. Despite flying many long haul legs.
JFK is a route that is often oversold with a lot of shuffling between different flights. If BA needs to roll people forward to fill the plane then they will. Chances are you go lucky under the algorithm and there is no guarantee you get upgraded again. I'm sure you'll find plenty of status holders who have been overlooked for upgrades in favor of people like yourself (I.e..non status holder),
.some may even suggest BA's algorithm is set up for your very case.... Tempt you into thinking this is normal (when it's not) and get you to shift your business...
