Back to the OP’s story, I am quite surprised that a middle name (albeit incorrect) would have caused trouble.
This is now giving me something new to worry about. I noticed that sometime within the past year, the name showing up on my AA tickets somehow changed to include a "Mr." (which I never added myself - I assume AA made some behind-the-scenes change to their system to include a title.)
In the past, when I booked a ticket, it showed my name as MSIXTY T (middle initial) LGA, which on my boarding passes translated into LGA_MSIXTYT.
Now my name shows up as LGA_MSIXTYMR
This has never been a problem for me, and in fact I didn't even notice it until I was halfway through a trip. I actually called in to AA because I wanted to avoid precisely this issue of name not matching my ID, and the agent told me it wouldn't be an issue. But now this story is making me nervous.
