If you travel infrequently (with UA) that concern is understandable. For those that are more frequent flyers, that is less of an issue.
I don't fly frequently enough just on UA to be able to use $500-$1K in travel money within 12 months.
Tickets once purchased are "own" by the travel, not the purchaser -- true for cash or certificates. Interesting not for miles.
If this was consistent, I'd understand and tread with care. My situation was as follows (numbers are made up for simplicity) -
1. Travel Cft #1 $300
Bought ticket for a friend for $200 with it.
Balance of $100 on Cft #1
stayed in my name and in my MileagePlus account.
2. Travel Cft #2 $500
Bought ticket for same friend for $300 using $100 from Cft #1 and $200 from Cft #2.
Balance of $300 on Cft #2
transferred to my friend's name and disappeared from my MileagePlus account.
I spent quite some time with UA Agents both in writing and over the phone trying to get them to explain this to me. In the end, I gave up. Yes, I had access to that Cft in my friend's account (while we're still on talking terms

). But that's just not the point.
What exactly was the rule that was applied to the purchase of the 2 tickets with the 2 Cfts that resulted in 2 different outcomes? I wouldn't want to have my Cft transferred to a less-than-friend for whom I may buy a ticket in future.
