For now they can be extended, no guarantees UA will allow that in the future.
If you travel infrequently (with UA) that concern is understandable.For those that are more frequent flyers, that is less of an issue.

Tickets once purchased are "own" by the travel, not the purchaser -- true for cash or certificates. Interesting not for miles.
