When checking in, we will go separately, one of us takes the "sample" carry-on that is under the size and limit, while the other stays out of view with the heavier bags, then we switch. Never had a problem at boarding.
quite a few airline that take safety seriously do check. not sure why people need to bring so much stuff onboard when you could have sent through everything and navigate airport with a civilised amout of stuff
