I wouldn't trust what you're seeing in terms of open seats, not because it's not accurate, but because there may be other factors. 48 hours out, my EWR-CPH flight still showed 7 open seats. 24 hours out, that had dropped to 2 open seats. Whether that was due to last minute bookings, booked passengers who hadn't bothered to select seats, or due to upgrades of passengers with status, I can't say. The same thing happened on my successful CPH-EWR flight. In both cases, I wasn't notified of my win/loss until just under 6 hours before departure.
