This isn’t an urgent issue. You have plenty of time.

If you don’t like the price of a through fare, try multi-city search on United. If you still don’t like the price, that’s when you start looking into multiple tickets. The fact that UA is charging $16K tor flights to HKG doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re charging $16K for flights to TFU via HKG. That’s not how airfare is priced.
