This could be a problem for yet another reason: If you used a credit card which provided rental-car loss/damage coverage, and the rental-car company were to claim damage after you returned the car, you might have trouble perfecting a claim with the credit-card's insurer. Typically, they will ask you to submit a copy of the rental agreement, as proof that you initiated the rental with the same credit card used to pay for the rental at the end.
