Airlines outside alliance are a fickle partner even though AS have been pretty stable with theirs. However there is nothing stopping from one of the partner airlines saying that yeah, it was nice but its time to go separate ways. Bye. And it would really suck then if that partner happened to be the one you actually use the points for.
