If I'm flying A-B-C, and A-B is delayed 30 minutes such that I'll misconnect, and would have to take a 1 hour later B-C, but instead they rebook me A-D-C on a different airline, arriving earlier than the alternate (but later than the original)... and then OAL A-D has an issue... I'd think that OAL is the cause.
It gets tricky if UA delays you 1 hour and AC delays you 3 hours and "4 hours" is the limit. But in this case, I think AC is the right target.
