However, I’m assuming that putting clothes in with the clubs could invalidate it as a strictly golf bag. Id prefer to be checking in at LAX and not having to pay $200 extra for an oversized golf bag inside of a carrying case.

charge you if it's golf bag (count against your free allowance). Only weight is considered.
