Yes, still not ideal if you're on one of the 1:30am flights, but better than the 9pm you mentioned.
I fail to see the problem here. If your stomach is on California time then 22:00 is way past local eating time (good luck finding restaurants open at that time in most towns outside SF). If you are adjusting your stomach to the new time zone (sometimes recommended by jetlag experts) then you will be fed after your flight takes off. IME there are few US airports that have concessions open after 10pm (many close earlier). In addition I find many airline club lounges remove the food at 9pm (e.g. Amex PHX shuts down at 8:30pm)

So I get the frustration, and certainly SFO pales in comparison to 24/7 airports internationally (e.g. IST) but I don't fault PP or the restaurants for closing early. Take it up with UA which closes ridiculously early despite numerous late night *A flights.
