I too would use US Air miles... Depending from your U.S. embarkation city, I'd consider using a Star Alliance Carrier, which once ticketed, would be valid regardless of whether US Air went belly-up or not. Varig connects to B.A. from Los Angeles, Miami & New York. You could even do a stopover in Rio.
