Cancellation Compensation Questions
Two of us, one reservation number, were booked on SK0943 CPH - ORD on July 18. The flight was cancelled. We were re-booked on the 20th. I submitted compensation and reimbursement forms and expense receipts to SAS. Here are the questions:
1) "The cancelation was caused by a bird strike, which according to judgment from the European Court of Justice in Case C-315/15 from the 4th of May 2017 is to be considered as an extraordinary circumstance." So, I am not due compensation. However, the bird strike occurred on July 17 in Chicago, the day before my Copenhagen based flight, putting the plane out of commission for July 17 - 18. Multiple flights between ORD and CPH both directions were cancelled as a result of one bird strike. SAS did not bring in a replacement plane until July 19.
Is it correct that none of us on impacted flights are entitled to compensation when SAS made the decision not to replace a disabled airplane for multiple scheduled flights?
2) I submitted reimbursement for meals and 2 hotel nights for 2 travelers totaling 5367 DKK or about $788 USD. The meals were not extravagant, the hotel mid-range where we were staying before the cancelation. I received notification that 442 USD is being deposited into my account.
Are there limits that the airlines impose on reimbursements? I have searched for this, but am unable to find anything.
My questions are more of clarification than complaint at this point. This is my first experience with EU261. Does the settlement seem typical? Any comments?
Thanks for helping me understand!
