Preferred seat assignments are not a Star Alliance Gold (*G) benefit. You may get lucky.

- when I get to checkout, it shows the fare class is actually economy S. According to the United Mileage Chart, does that mean I only earn 50% miles, which means 50% of the PQP? No matter that United Star Alliance Gold Status earns 8x?
Correct. PQP on a partner-operated flight on a non-United ticket is figured based upon the fare class and distance, regardless of any status you may have.

Well, it depends upon what you’re looking for. Flying UA, you will get free Economy Plus at booking for yourself and one companion. On the other hand, United’s on-board catering and service aren’t winning any awards. If you’re primarily focused on status, you can calculate what you’d get for NZ-operated flights in any fare class at pqp.economies.com and then make your own decision.

Economy Plus is a UA-specific product that isn’t generally available on other carriers. It is not Premium Economy, which is a separate class of service with wider seats.
