I would in fact have gone in the morning, gone and had lunch in Dublin and flown back around tea time. Indeed as I like Dublin, I might even have gone out the night before and had a full day in Dublin. Once he was out there, he was into his itinerary the minute he checked in.
I assure you that I overkill in allowing time for delays and cancellations. As I said I threw caution to the wind connecting from one PNI to another at LIS. It worked and I had more than enough time in the improved Lounge at LIS. When I read about the B2Bs that some of the boys do here, I feel that I am in the presence of either the very brave or very foolhardy, I know not which. As long as it is they who do this that is their business and none of mine. I watched it work in Sofia and it was easy but I would not feel comfortable doing so.
I used DUB quite often for cheap flights in J.
I often fly out of DUB with BA or AF/KL via LHR and CDG/AMS respectively, usually to LAX.
I find flying FR around 24 hours before from BHX is safest option. Then I stay in Clayton Hotel at DUB. All in around £200 for FR/Clayton costs to save £1500. Not bad.
Done this for FRA and CDG before too. CDG is easy if the Eurostar runs fine.
I think its fine, just ensure enough time and protection for peace of the mind. Ultimately the savings for long haul J product, make it worth cutting in extra slack for longer layover to be safe.
Remember with DUB you have option of ferry, lots of daily flights from LHR/LCY/LTN/STN/LGW/BHX/MAN/LPL etc plus option to fly BFS or BHD and get overnight bus. Plenty options in case of issue.
