I would in fact have gone in the morning, gone and had lunch in Dublin and flown back around tea time. Indeed as I like Dublin, I might even have gone out the night before and had a full day in Dublin. Once he was out there, he was into his itinerary the minute he checked in.
I assure you that I overkill in allowing time for delays and cancellations. As I said I threw caution to the wind connecting from one PNI to another at LIS. It worked and I had more than enough time in the improved Lounge at LIS. When I read about the B2Bs that some of the boys do here, I feel that I am in the presence of either the very brave or very foolhardy, I know not which. As long as it is they who do this that is their business and none of mine. I watched it work in Sofia and it was easy but I would not feel comfortable doing so.
Yep, we went out on the first flight, had a day in Dublin and then came home at c.18:00 (crucially not the last flight of the day). In the past we have done an overnight, but we had the kids with us and so risked it this time. We met up with an old colleague and went round Malahide, which is great for little kids. Of course there's still some risk, but given the number of flights from LHR on EI and BA I was happy enough that should something go wrong we'd have a decent enough chance of making it to Dublin for the start of the main trip. Not foolproof of course and maybe a little risky, given BA's recent performance.
My point was re. baggage, though. We had checked bags but didn't need to spend extra on stopovers, nor did we have to take it with us on the positioning. I realise that's partly because we're fortunate to live close enough to LHR to get home. We could also drive, meaning no faffing about with taxis and car seats.
