I slept a considerable amount of time, and sound/light from the kitchen were minimal throughout the flight. The seat is not truly adjacent to the galleys, which are positioned further toward the front of the plane, and I can't really recall ever hearing any noise from dishes or food preparation. The seat is most adjacent to a bank of cabinets that the crew use for storage, and there was a bit of activity around these especially post-take off and before landing. But honestly it was quite minimal; and these storage cabinets are still obscured by the curtain dividing the business class cabin. There is a thick curtain that the crew use to partition the cabin adjacent to the 10A seat and it was very effective.
Just as important, the extra legroom is a lifesaver on the 18hr 30min flight when you are awake (we were actually on the plane for over 20hrs due to delays). The ability to stretch my legs out more was appreciated asleep or awake, as I'm 6"3. I have traveled in the regular seats on SQ23, and found 10A far more comfortable and enjoyable. If the JFK ground experience with SQ was not so abysmal, I would consider SQ23 again in a heartbeat! Alas....but this is another issue for another thread.
I also had a great experience on the ULR on 10A. The galley noise didn't bother me at all - but then, I use Bose Sleepbuds to blast white noise into my ears, and little gets through that. I was worried that the food smells would bother me, but they didn't at all.
