How useful it is to collect Marriott depends on how often you stay in places where most people don't redeem. If you do, then Marriott points can be very valuable at those places. If you're only going stay where everybody else redeems, they're not going to be of much use.
I also agree. I need a one night stay in VLC (Valencia) next spring. My first choice, and I am sure it would be the first choice of many, would be the Westin; beautiful property, friendly staff, great breakfast, Elite recognition & suite upgrades. Currently, 52K points (out of reach of a 35K FNA) offsetting a €355 Member flexible rate.
I booked a night at the AC Hotel Colon instead. 18K points offsetting a €453 Member flexible rate. Am I really getting 2.67 cpp? No, because I would never pay €453 for the room. However, it is still a good redemption.
