People forget the most important thing... you must clear immigration and customs at YVR before heading for YYC. 11am is the start of PEAK times at the arrivals hall in YVR. The non-residents line is usually very long.. and at least, it'll take your friend at least 30 mins to clear.

I'd ask for at least a 90 min connectiing time.
