CA PEK-JFK has been avoiding Russia airspace, but not sure about winter flight paths.

I think PVG is less of a detour than PEK since you have to avoid Russia and North Korea to get to PEK. And if BR and CI can do JFK-TPE avoiding Russia, I would assume EWR-PVG is possible. Distance-wise it should not be that much difference (crossing over Japan to get to PVG vs. TPE).
Why is winter an issue?
