When someone states they were not advised about something when that's blatantly incorrect, it's worthy of being pointed out so that they know where to look next time. It's not a defence mechanism.

For the actual concern, I agree with you. There's no bad seat as such, seats will always be window or aisle in Club Europe with little (practically zero) chance of downgrade due to the movable divider according to Club demand on any given day. If there was a need to make sure I didn't suffer a middle seat, I could understand the need to pre-assign a seat for $ but as that's not even an option, I'd say there isn't a need for the OP to stump up additional cash on this occasion.
