As stated above that really suits BAEC members with status as they then, generally speaking, have a better choice of seats especially with late bookers. That is common ish in the business world but some clients/companies have seat selection included in their contracts with BA.

I wouldn't worry re getting a seat for yourself at OLCI and as others have said the more CE bookings the further down the curtain/divider will go down the cabin. Check in at the earliest opportunity is what I'd say.

Talking about charges one thing I very much dislike is USA 'Resort Fees' in many hotels (who started that rip off idea?!) which as a customer I don't have a choice other than to pay whereas re seating on BA you do have a choice. Apples and Oranges though and although I disagree with that conecpt I'd still visit the USA as it's somewhere I very much like.
