I have found this discussion extremely helpful, even the comment about earning Avios for a paid flight on Malaysia Airlines. If I can earn Avios, I can also earn Alaska miles. I'm now convinced I should wait the extra hours, stay in the same terminal, and buy my onward ticket on Malaysia.
