The "we expect turbulence so will be suspending service" excuse is spreading too. Used to be mainly very short under 1 hour flights, but I've been hearing it more and more on flights for 2+ hours very soon after the seatbelt sign is turned off (sometimes never turned off). Guess what? in majority of flights there is very little turbulence. When pilots announce it usually its more legit, but now FAs make their own announcements more often and then you never see them again out of the galleys.
This started happening years ago on the QX SEA-PDX shuttle on perfectly calm days when almost every flight was a Q400. I'd rather be told that there was no longer wine/beer (and now water) service as a policy than be bs'd.
