Obon 2023: New record for Shinkansen trains
It is Obon in Japan and people are getting out of Tokyo. JR Tokai ran extra Shinkansen trains to deal with the demand. On Thursday (Aug. 10) JR Tokai ran 471 Shinkansen trains, which was a new record for the number of Shinkansen trains ran in one day. From 6:00 p.m. to 6:59 p.m. on Aug. 10, 17 departure of the Shinkansen heading to Nagoya/Shin Osaka at Tokyo station. This means the Shinkansen departure once every 3 min. and 32 sec. from Tokyo to Nagoya/Shin Osaka.

To give a reference, JR Tokai runs N700S series trains between Tokyo and Shin Osaka. 16 cars long, 13 regular seat cars, and 3 Green Car. Which is 1123 regular seats and 200 Green Car seats, a total of 1323 seats per train. 17 departures in one hour period mean there were 22,491 seats available on Shinkansen over one hour period.
