As a regular flier in/out of Reno, I am fully aware of the "prepare the cabin early" excuse. When the plane makes its initial approach into Reno (or soon after takeoff), it makes sense not to provide service at that point since it can get bumpy in the Reno area due to the winds passing over the mountains (it gets bumpiest when hitting 10,000 feet). But some crews are giving this excuse way before even getting close to Reno....even more than an hour away. Not providing service while you're still flying over Washington and Oregon (and nowhere near Reno) is just an excuse not to provide service. Most crews can easily provide service between these cities and most do indeed provide full service...but a few crews simply look for any excuse not to work. Some crews are just better than others.
The "we expect turbulence so will be suspending service" excuse is spreading too. Used to be mainly very short under 1 hour flights, but I've been hearing it more and more on flights for 2+ hours very soon after the seatbelt sign is turned off (sometimes never turned off). Guess what? in majority of flights there is very little turbulence. When pilots announce it usually its more legit, but now FAs make their own announcements more often and then you never see them again out of the galleys.
