Cars and their passengers do get randomly (they would say it's intelligence led) directed through a security screening area at Dover. Searches are quite common at Calais too.
Funniest one of these I ever had was coming through Dunkirk a few years back in a Mini. French army performed a security check which involved me opening the boot to ensure that we weren't trying to sneak anyone onboard. The boot was as full of wine as was possible so no room for even the smallest of stowaways. This was met with strong approval by the French soldiers. We then drove in a straight-line approximately 50m at which point DFDS rent-a-cop security personnel insisted that we stopped, opened the boot to see if.... etc. In full view of the French servicemen.....
