Economy class AA domestic redemptions are indeed issued as Hand Baggage Only. The same goes for AS domestic economy redemptions.
The only way to get luggage with such tickets, without charge, is if you have oneworld Ruby status and above. Of course you can always pay the fee for extra baggage also should you need it. The option to do this will be given to you at online check-in as well as at the airport.
