I have a trip that is subject to a weather-related travel alert, so I called AA (since the app said my ticket cannot be changed online).

The phone agent refused, saying that the flight is sold out. Even though AA is still selling seats online.
Why can’t AA phone agents book tickets on flights that AA is still selling tickets for online?
And if AA won’t move me to the “sold-out” flight, will a phone agent put me on the standby list? The origin and destination are the same, although I would be moving from a connection to a direct flight; there is a weather-related travel alert at the origin and connecting airport.
