I don't think this is as big of a deal as it was made out to be. If the pilots are telling the truth (and not just covering with a "story") -- then a mistake was made, a solution was implemented (pitch down reduce speed) and once flaps were adjusted the climb started again. I just don't believe this was ending up in the ocean at any time.
