I fly with checked baggage if needed and a rucksack that fits under the seat in front. The passive aggressive clown show of trying to find overhead locker space for a roll-on isn't worth the candle to me. Watching otherwise intelligent peeps descend to mouth-breathing evil-eye glaring as they try to get past each other in a single aisle aeroplane boarding from both ends whilst having to engage random strangers to remove smaller bags from the overheads isn't worth it. The price I pay to check a bag is worth it to me to avoid that whole pantomime.
Boarding late whilst parked in a seat sipping coffee watching the rage build among fellow passengers is a sight to behold in itself, Ryanair and easyJet do this way better.
I always check my bag as well. Except I prefer 1C on my EU flights. So if I don’t board in group 1 the lockers are full and my backpack is stored anywhere from the crew locker to the aft lavs. No thanks.
