A Concorde on the move in New York

I resisted the temptation to say it has taken off, but it is in the air. Not the way many of us would have liked though. This story is from the Telegraph with its JavaScript paywall.

A former British Airways Concorde was on the move again on Wednesday - but not as you might imagine.

The supersonic jet, once the fastest commercial aircraft in the world, was craned out of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York for restoration, in front of a crowd of eager aviation fans.

It took approximately two hours to crane the aircraft from Pier 86 on to a barge, which then transported it down the Hudson River to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where it will undergo a three-month restoration project.

The aircraft will be stripped down to its bare metal, sanded, and then repainted in its original colours Credit: Mary Altaffer/AP The work will consist of stripping the plane down to its bare metal, sanding it, and then repainting it in its original colours and markings.

The museum also plans to renovate a section of Pier 86 adjacent to where the jet was located to create an additional 372 square metres of public space.

“We are stewards of some of the most important artefacts of the 20th and 21st centuries, and with that comes the responsibility to preserve, protect and perpetuate these icons for generations to come,” said Susan Marenoff-Zausner, the president of the Intrepid Museum.
