NZ’s IATA clearing code is 086, which is pre-fixed to the start of every ticket issued by NZ.

A PNR is just really a hand reference code, to access a booking. A bit like having a short url, it’s handy but not the only option.

A ticking number is more important, but of course isn’t as customer friendly.
Most other airlines cannot lookup NZ PNRs, and with limited success on other access systems such as CheckMyTrip - at least in myexperience.
