Carry-on Personal Items

I usually embark on three international trips per year, originating from a Midwestern city in the US and heading to South Asia, always with Qatar Airways. Last week, my usual travel route shifted from Chicago to Dallas when I made my first connection through Dallas from an AA flight to QR for Doha, traveling in economy. It was at the Dallas QR gate that I encountered a newfound focus on the dimensions of personal items by the gate agents. Typically, my 16" under-seat spinner and compact laptop backpack accompany me as hassle-free carry-ons. This time, however, the agents strictly defined personal items as items like a lady's purse, a waist pouch, or a small tote, excluding my laptop bag from that category. Signs posted in the QR gate area communicated one piece carry-on for economy . The agent wanted me to check-in my spinner to the final destination, resulting in a painful effort to fit my toiletries and change of clothes into my petite laptop backpack. She told me that they have been strictly enforcing this policy for the past 3–4 months at all airports. The person ahead of me vigorously advocated for their small laptop briefcase, a possession that, as per the agents, is not a personal item, which I found very odd. Considering these events, I am left contemplating whether this practice for QR is a widespread implementation or if it's unique to the Dallas gateway. As I anticipate my upcoming return journey in a mere week's time, I am seeking advice from this community. Have any of you encountered a comparable scenario or gained insight into this potential new enforcement? Thank you for being part of this valuable community.
